The importance of a high search position
Being the most commonly used search engine, Google is always trying to improve the services it provides to the world by introducing new technologies, updating systems and archiving more and more information.
Recently Google have released findings from a study on eye-tracking in relation to a simple Google search and its results page. The examples used various searches for information on "spanish water dog" and "how to tie a tie"- a simple task for some but still valuable information for others. It was revealed through the study that the search term itself is not what's important. The study monitored how people read the page of results and where (on average) their eyes were drawn to.
A lot of the findings were as expected, but still the results were more proof that being the top spot on Google is the best way to get visitors to your website. The following image taken from the Google report shows a results page and where the viewers eyes were pointed. The darker the shading the more focus it got from the test subjects.

What can we draw from this? Well the first result obviously has a large focus but the second result also carries a lot of weight. Very quickly over the 3rd and 4th results we can see the user is losing interest in what is displayed and by the 7th result very little attention at all is given.
